Grayson Highlands

Highlands PoniesDarlene and I took advantage of some pleasant weather recently and took a short road trip to the Grayson Highlands State Park, which lies adjacent to nearby Mount Rogers National Recreation Area Park across the state line in Virginia. Darlene snapped these pictures of the beautiful scenery and the wild ponies. I’ve learned that the “wild” ponies are transplants from the wild herds on Assateague Island that were introduced to the area in the ’70s to graze the balds and keep the vegetation in check. A task once performed by cattle which local ranchers used to graze on the mountains.
