Rhododendron and Mountain Laurel Blooms

Wednesday, May 14th, 2014

Mountain LaurelSpring, at last, has sprung. Here in the North Carolina high country and along the Blue Ridge Parkway this means the annual orgy of color as numerous wildflowers and blooming trees and bushes come into blossom. Some of the most distinctive and prevalent are the mountain laurel (kalmia latifolia) and the varieties of rhododendron seen throughout the area. They generally start to bloom in mid-May and depending on the species and the elevation continue through the end of June so a traveler on the Blue Ridge Parkway can continue to enjoy their splendor into early summer. A useful schedule of blooms can be found here.
